An Inspiring Story

A Professor’s Multi-Millionaire Bread Enterprise

Fifty-four-year-old M Mahadevan is today known not only in India, but overseas too, as 'Hot Breads Mahadevan'.

His journey from being a professor at the Madras University to an entrepreneur in charge of a multi-million-dollar business spanning various countries can only be described as

amazingly inspiring.

But the man is still the same: simple hearted and hard working. Here is his interesting story.

Early days

I come from a simple town in Tamil Nadu called Udumalpet; it is 65 kilometres from Coimbatore. Though both my parents were doctors, I took my post graduate degree in Commerce.

My interest in the hotel industry began after reading Arthur Hailey's Hotel. I had just joined college then. In hindsight, I feel what attracted me to the hotel industry was people; I love meeting people.

My parents also met people, but only those who were in pain and misery, and I want to meet people who are happy. Those who come to a bakery or restaurant are always in a joyous mood.

I came to Chennai in 1979 as an Assistant Professor at Madras University. I taught Marketing to management and accounts students. That was during daytime.

The passion to be in the hotel industry was so intense that I started working for four hours at Hotel Ambassador Pallava at night to learn more about the industry. I was a trainee, a bell boy, a receptionist: everything. So, you can say I was a professor during day time and a bell boy in the evening.

My mother was aghast when she came to know about what I was doing. She asked, 'Are you mad? You are a teacher, and then you are going and cleaning tables? I can't understand this. I will not be able to find a girl to marry you!'

In those days, no girl from any good family in Chennai would marry a man who worked in hotels! In short, my mother didn't like it a bit. But I told her, 'One day, I will become the owner of a hotel and give employment to many people.' She was happy to hear that part.

First enterprise, a take-out with Rs 60,000

I met my partner while I was working in the hotel, and we started our first take out -- at the Tic-Tac unit in Chennai. The unit was selling north Indian food and I started a Chinese take-away there.

I opened my kitchen with Rs 60,000, and it opened at 5 p.m. and closed at 11.30 p.m. That was the time Chinese food was a craze among the people here.

One of the persons who came to take the food was building a commercial tower and asked me whether I was interested in taking up a place there.

That was how the restaurant Cascade opened. We served Chinese, Thai, Malay and Japanese cuisine.

Those who sold Chinese had red and green as the interiors, but I wanted something different. I got Parmeshwar Godrej from Mumbai through my neighbour, who was artist M F Hussain's son. And I told her I wanted all white and blue. I wanted my restaurant to look different and the interiors became a selling point. Many came to see the interiors.

From then on, business roared. That was in 1986.

From hotel to bakery

I used to go to Singapore to buy my ingredients like Chinese sauces for my hotel and that was when I saw these little bakeries. I decided to open a bakery in India and sell bread. Many told me, 'people look at bread as something that they take when they are ill. How are you going to sell bread?'

My partner said, 'You are crazy. The success of Cascade has got to your head!' So, whatever money I had (Rs.300,000) in Cascade, I took with me, and decided to start my bread unit on my own. I got Rs 800,000 as loan. I started Hot Breads with Rs 11 lakh (Rs 1.1 million) in 1989.

We had to import bread making machines in those days. It was the license regime then -- not like today. I gave the project plan and it took four months for the committee to take a decision though they met every month.

Once you got the license, it was mentioned in it what machine I was to import and at what cost. Not even a dollar more I was supposed to bring in to the country!

I was not looking at selling just bread alone but curry buns, pastries, pizzas, burgers, etc. Bread was only a trap for the customer to come inside.

We took a bun, filled it with curry and made it a curry bun. We filled chicken tikka inside a Croissant. I got the idea to make these things Indian after I saw what Japanese did to their bakery items. Our curry buns are a big hit even in Paris.

People used to crowd in our unit at Alsa Malls in Chennai.

From day one, we started making profits as the concept was unique and the product tasty. It was a perfect cocktail. We broke even in the first year itself and never looked back.

In the third month itself, people from Kochi and Bangalore came to me to start Hot Breads units there.

Soon, I came to be known as 'Hot Breads Mahadevan'!

First overseas Hot Breads unit in Dubai

In 1994, a Tamil couple who had come to Chennai saw how Hot Breads attracted people in Chennai. They asked me, 'Would you like to come to Dubai?' I said, 'Yes!'

I had around 12 units in India by then. We went to Dubai, started a unit there and it was a huge success. But we had to close it down after a year as it became a no-parking zone. When we were about to wind up, I was a bit sad that my overseas venture did not take off.

We soon got a contract from a union co-operative society. From day one, it was a roaring success. It was a Godsend. Like they say, when one door closes, ten others open.

For 14 years, we were at the same place. Only last year, they replaced us but then now, we have so many other units in Dubai.

The strangest demand we got was for Arabic bread. A gentleman came to our shop and said, if you don't have Arabic bread when you are here, shut your shop'. The very next day, I hired a Lebanese guy and we started making Arabic bread. Kids might like sandwich bread, but elders still prefer Arabic bread. But what is catching up is the curry-flavoured bread all over.

Becoming a Non-Resident Indian

After I opened my first unit in Dubai, I decided to become an NRI. The rules in India were stringent then. If you are investing from India, you have to take permission. Even if you had to cough or sneeze, you had to call the Reserve Bank of India and ask, 'Can we sneeze?'

The stringent rules forced me to be a Non-Resident Indian. Anyway, I would be away for more than 180 days to build my units. The profits you make internationally are not taxed here. The profits I made were put back to start more units abroad. The rules are different now. But I am happy that I chose the NRI route.

The second stop was Paris

In the last 20 years, I have opened -- with help from others -- 130 bakeries in 16 countries: the United States (New York and San Francisco), Ghana, France (Paris), UAE (Dubai), Botswana, Kuwait, Muscat, Singapore, Malaysia, the United Kingdom (London), etc. Now we are going to Australia.

But the market in India is booming and we have 68 units here.

We started with Rs 60,000. Now, we make around Rs 100 crore (Rs 1 billion) in India and internationally around Rs 120 crore (Rs 1.2 billion).

Hand of God

I believe in the hand of God. You have to be at the right place at the right time, and God's hands have to be there to help you and guide you. Wherever I went -- Dubai, Botswana, San Francisco -- a force took me there.

My ideas worked because they came at the right time. Instead of 1989, if I had opened in 1980, I would have gone bust. Doing your homework is very important which is studying and understanding the market.

I have made many mistakes, but I try to learn from them. We keep learning.

My advice to budding entrepreneurs is, innovate and think different. Don't follow anyone's footsteps; leave your own footprints for others to follow. Try to be lean and mean. Don't take your customers for granted.

Unless you have passion, you will not be able to carry a smiling face. More than hard work, it is the passion that you need to succeed.

My 'boys'

I have 3,000 boys working for me in India. I started with 14 boys in Dubai, now we have more than 1,000 boys working abroad. I love my boys, but I am a hard taskmaster. I don't accept laziness. I don't like procrastination. I drive them crazy, I know. Some of my boys run to my mother and complain about me!

We started 'Winners' in Chennai to teach poor, bright boys to bake. When you teach them a skill, you give them a life.

My happiness is not in turning my Rs 60,000 into Rs 120 crore. I am happy because I give employment to 3,000 boys in India. India needs not one but 10,000 Mahadevans to give employment to thousands of people. What I have done, anybody can do. I am an ordinary guy from a small town, but I had big dreams and commitment.

My first impression was the site looks professional and clean, with an attractive look and feel. It is easy to read and understand. Joining the site was easy and painless--they do offer 2 upgrade options but they are not required to gain the benefits.

The Members Area is very well laid out and intuitive--I could figure out what to do after only a few minutes and was able to get up & running in less than 5 minutes. Inside the site, you create links and ads--the links you simply enter any URL links you use into the generator and it transforms them into "Juggernaut" links. You create ads for anything you want to promote using the Juggernaut Ad Generator, which is very easy to use. You can create as many links and as many ads as you like. And they are organized in a logical way--links are displayed in the order you create them but also your 5 most recent links appear on the main page for quick reference. Also, since the link generator is the tool you'll use most, it is also right at the top of the main page when you login. Very smart!

After you've created at least 1 link and 1 ad you can start to generate traffic. Just use and promote the new Juggernaut link instead of the original source link you had. Every time the Juggernaut link is clicked, the page loads followed by a small ad window in the lower right corner. It displays 3 ads PLUS an image with your affiliate link that goes back to Juggernaut. So if anyone clicks the Juggernaut image they see the site, and if they signup they become your referral. To set the stage for the importance of networking, not only from a business view, but from every aspect of your life, please allow me to describe my personal experiences with effective networking. This was a totally low-tech effort for me and my family; there was no Internet or computer of any kind involved. We just recognized the effectiveness of networking at a time when we desperately needed help. Later in this article we’ll discuss some ideas reflecting the innovation in network techniques.
Our family broke apart at the exact time our son graduated from college; he was literally dumped on the street with no resources. My ex-wife landed on her feet, but I was just as bad off as my son. What to do? Use the networks we created through the years. It turned out that our son had a very tight group of friends. One of them gave him a place to stay, fed him, and gave a cocktail party where he met an industrialist who gave him a job on the spot. In my case, I also used a couple of fraternity connections as well as several hunting buddies I had known for a long time. Because of network relationships developed over time, we all came out in good shape. Never underestimate the power or importance of your network.
You may be wondering exactly what is a network? Most definitions say a network is any kind of interconnection between any group of people; it’s really a method of sharing information among people. Networks may be used to accumulate funds from members, or those they know, to accomplish some larger objective, or to use the individual resources for new insight into ongoing or future collective projects. Entrepreneurial networks may be social in nature; they provide leadership capabilities from among members as well as other skills needed to accomplish the objectives of the network. Entrepreneurial networks often become involved in community projects by providing leadership and manpower for community improvement, various reforms, and legislation that tends to accomplish the network’s goals.
Networking is the art of building alliances. It's not contacting everyone you know when you are looking for a new job and asking if they know of any job openings. Networking starts long before a job search, and you probably don't even realize you are doing it. It’s not possible to say, “I need a network to help me accomplish this important goal.” These relationships have to be nurtured in order to be useful. Consider the example in the opening story about me and my son. The college relationships were built and nurtured over many years, from six to 30 years in our case. These contacts would have been useless to us if we had just gone out cold and started to form a network. This can be done, and should be if you aren’t a member of such a group; but they won’t be useful until all the members feel they can trust you and the other members. They will not do business with you, nor will they refer others to you until they are absolutely comfortable around you.
Some activities that you may do when networking are:
1. Attend association meetings like the Chamber of Commerce.
2. Join Professional groups, like your accounting society—they are good for networking.
3. While attending your child’s school or sporting events, meet as many new people as you can.
4. Every community has some sort of local clean-up day; participate in these events.
5. Participate in local service clubs.
6. Visit outside meeting times with members of your religious or social groups. The better you know each other, the more likely you’ll be to be able to help each other.
7. Talk with your neighbors; they may be able to help you in an emergency as well as being a network contact.
8. Initiate talking with others waiting for the doctor or in a bank waiting line.
9. Post your message on mailing lists and at chat rooms.
10. Talk to people waiting in your office or place of employment.
Perhaps the best place to network is right in your own home. You can invite coworkers, prospects, and other contacts to a holiday open house or just for a visit. Your home will establish a more intimate environment for cultivating a personal relationship than a meeting in a public place. Another place that offers the opportunity for close relationships is some local charity. People you meet in a charitable setting will realize you want to give of yourself, and a good relationship may be founded on the act of giving of yourself to help others. Always remember your network is a two-way street. When you ask someone in your network to do something that will benefit you, you must be prepared to return the favor when asked.
You can also use any holiday to network on the Internet. Write a special greeting for your blog and send it to all of those on your contact list. It helps to include a photo or video to help people remember you. Be sure to carry enough business cards with you. They are perhaps the best tool you have; don’t hesitate to freely pass them out to everyone you see. After every networking session, send all those you met a hand written note telling them how much you enjoyed meeting them. Your goal is to firm up your initial meeting by creating the impression of a real professional and, of course, to help them remember you.
New network members must be patient and not expect instant contact relationships. Such connections form over time, and every individual has to earn the respect and trust of the other members before asking them for contacts or referrals. Network participants should create what some trainers call an “elevator pitch.” This is simply a concise summary of your background and abilities; it should be brief enough to tell a complete story about yourself in no more time than it takes to ride an elevator to the next floor.
You may ask, “Why is networking so important?” Consider this. The average person is acquainted with about 250 people. This means every time you meet someone new and develop a lasting relationship where your new contact feels they know you and trust you, your contacts have potentially increased by 250. After you complete this process a few times you will have a very large chain of endless referrals.
Networking may sound like fun and games. While many events are conducted in pleasant surroundings, there is a lot work involved if you do it right. You need always to be connected with your target crowd. Focus on one individual at a time so you are completely aware of what you and your contacts are doing and saying at every moment. Maintain eye contact, listen well and respond promptly when questioned, and anything else that will convince your contact they have your complete attention. This even extends to talking on the phone – don’t try to do other writing or computer tasks while you’re on the phone. Pay attention to what the other person is saying. A lot of people seem to wander off during a conversation; paying proper attention will make you stand out and be memorable, which is your goal. Things you can do to maintain a memorable image with your contacts are:
• Ask questions that will force your contact to think.
• Do anything to help your contact remember your personal keywords which are:
1. Your name
2. Your company name
3. Your business/industry (in three words or less)
4. Your product
5. Your location
It is possible to do some online networking. These are good some reasons for using the Internet:
• Access thousands of discussion groups and community forums covering hundreds of subjects. "Break the ice" before meeting someone in person.
• Listen, engage, or be engaged as you wish.
• No one can see you sweat, and you don't have to feel like a wallflower since no one will see you standing off by yourself.
• There are recruiters lurking the lists to find potential candidates or service providers.
• Chat Rooms and Web Forums are like your office water cooler.
• Social Networking Websites are a little different in that they work the "six degrees of separation" concept to the extreme, using the Internet to turn who you are, who you know, and what you know into a monster-sized spider net of connectivity.
• Mailing Lists are a long-standing communication forum heavily used in academic and research professions.
There are some limitations, however. The most prominent one is best stated by John Chow, a prominent web entrepreneur. Anyone interested in making money on the web should visit his blog, which registers 17,000 on Alexa (extremely good traffic).
John says about Internet networking:
It’s great that the Internet has allowed us to communicate instantly with people from all over the world. However, no amount of technology will ever replace good old fashioned face-to-face networking. Building a relationship is so much easier when you’re looking at the person you’re trying to build a relationship with. And in this business, it’s all about the relationship.
When you stay in touch and develop relationships with people, your business will come to mind first when people need your products or services. This also increases the number of referrals people will give to your business.
There are many ways to maintain contact with people after your initial meeting. Most of these are inexpensive except for taking some time. You must do these things to be a successful networker. For example:
• You can use the telephone.
• You can send an e-mail.
• You can send them a snail-mail handwritten note now and again.
• Better, still, drop in to see them in person for coffee, lunch or a drink
Remember them on birthdays or other special days.
• Share a new article or other important item with your new contacts.
• This shows not only that you thought about them, but also that you listened when they were telling you about their interests.
• While random kindness never hurts, keep most of your contacts on a consistent basis.

One advertiser says Obama has three things everyone would die for: he’s new, different, and attractive. On top of that he has managed to tap the “millenials,” those people between 18 and 29 who will outnumber “boomers” by 2010, a vast reservoir of people and wealth. This group is susceptible to the strategy called OPEN, for on-demand, personal, engaging, and networks. Obama has used this strategy, along with his commitment to “adaptive leadership” to reach this group. Adaptive leadership allows one to handle problems requiring a shift in community thinking. Here’s a contrast with a visionary: the visionary states a specific plan to be implemented, while an adaptive leader works with their constituents to build a plan together.
Senator Obama has managed to harness all this power by networking on the Internet using the talents of Chris Hughes, a founder of Facebook. Hughes knows no coding at all, but he has mastered the art of social networking, and look how successful he has been for Obama’s campaign. He raises millions of dollars every day in addition to getting thousands of new voter registrations. This indicates to me that all of us entrepreneurs need to get really familiar with Facebook, YouTube, and similar sites. The Senator’s success came immediately with the first caucus in Iowa. We all ought to be so successful. Impressive.
A new form of networking is called “organized coworking.” This is an offshoot of working at home, and CNN says it has spread to many cities. It’s a kind of oxymoron that people who work at home to enjoy relative isolation would want to join a group of like-minded people. In spite of wanting to work alone, many people want times when they have social interaction with like-minded people. These networks provide some of the same things conventional groups offer, that being tips and solutions to your own problems. That’s what a network does.
These coworker facilities use inexpensive space and offer tenants 24/7 use of DSL Internet, WiFi, a kitchenette and hang-out area to meet and relax. Users describe the quarters as “your own space that's not in your living room and certainly not a cube." Its entire mission is to join people from different types of industries in a given area (geographic areas are covered by BNI Chapters), provide a setting for getting them to know each other, and getting their commitment to get to know the others in the chapter and refer business to them as much as possible. They, in turn, will do the same for you. At every meeting, you’ll come away with a business card from every other person who attended the meeting, and you’ll have ample opportunity to let the others know when you have special announcements or special needs. The study embraced networks for advice and resources, and emotional networks providing warmth, praise, and encouragement. Findings were that women have larger social networks for advice and resources. But men, have larger "emotional" networks - the complex of associations that provide warmth, praise, and encouragement. And men apparently profit more from these emotional attachments than women do.
Such a finding is surprising, because men aren’t supposed to be emotional. The study showed men use these emotional ties better than women do. Women entrepreneurs are better at establishing networks of friends, family, and associates, and their networks are wider and bigger than those set up by male entrepreneurs, but the bigger the network, the less the revenues and profits for women. Women entrepreneurs develop large networks, but these associations hurt profitability. The bigger the networks are for female entrepreneurs, the more they seem to drag down revenue growth. Women have big networks, but they include lots of the wrong people, and people who have no useful resources. The researcher speculated women network for the sake of relationships, and men for what the network members have to offer. This study seems to show that in the high-risk, high-speed work of entrepreneurial business, women should seek fewer (and better) members in their emotional, resource, and advice networks.
Maybe this discussion has shown you the importance of networking as much as you can. Even in remote areas there are network opportunities. People separated from one another by distance gather in churches, community buildings, schools, and at various area social functions. All of these offer networking opportunities. And never forget the Internet. If you learn how to duplicate Senator Obama you will be FOREVER VERY RICH.

If your suppliers offer you discounts for early payment, offer the same to your customers (just maybe not at the same magnitude) or offer discounts for cash. You may lament the fact that certain words have been hijacked to have different meanings in today’s lingo, (e.g., “gay” or “cookie” or “ice”) but there’s no denying that the word “green”—in its environmentally friendly context—has become way more than just an adjective denoting color. It has become an entire movement embracing personal, group, and corporate efforts to develop environmentally friendly practices—practices that lead to sustainability (using natural resources no faster than they can be replaced naturally) as opposed to net consumption. As a sidebar, I just came across the term “dark green” for someone who is seriously committed to environmentally responsible principles. I like that so much better than “tree hugger,” don’t you?
This article is aimed at all home-based businesses, not just those whose product or service is directly to the environment, conservation, or the green movement. I want to convince you that “green awareness” is important regardless of what you’re selling. Not only is it ethically responsible, but if handled tastefully and sincerely, a green mindset can actually be a marketing asset.
Business and personal consumption are typically measured in terms of your “carbon footprint.” According to Plant-a-Tree.org, “your carbon footprint is the direct effect your actions and lifestyle have on the environment in terms of carbon dioxide emissions.” Travel needs often are the biggest part of your carbon footprint, followed by your electricity demands at home and in your office. This is because cars, buses and airplanes burn gasoline (whether they are private or public) and your home uses a significant portion of your personal electricity needs. These needs are generally met from fossil fuel burning power plants. Other actions having a direct or indirect impact include your diet and the clothes you wear. All these actions contribute to accelerating global warming and climate change.
The truth is that in starting and operating a home-based business, you have probably already reduced your carbon footprint significantly. You no longer consume fuel during a daily commute, and you probably do less laundry and dry-cleaning since you don’t have to wear “work clothes” every day. Then get to work and try to:
Reduce fuel (drive responsibly, buy fuel-efficient cars).
Reduce travel (consolidate errand trips, use public transportation, eliminate unnecessary travel by using video-conferencing, walk or bicycle when you can).
Reduce waste and recycle glass, metal, plastics, and paper.
Use recycled products and office supplies.
Reduce energy consumption in your home and office (stop energy leaks, close doors, adjust thermostats, switch to fluorescent lighting as bulbs are replaced, clean filters and condenser coils).
Purchase energy efficient appliances (look for the EnergyStar logo).
Invest in offsetting your carbon footprint.
What is “Offsetting” and how does it work?
Offsetting is based on the assumption that you can try to balance the carbon you emit against its reduction or absorption elsewhere, especially where it is more economical to do so. Carbon offsets typically include renewable energy, energy efficiency and reforestation projects. Offsetting should not replace efforts you make to reduce your carbon footprint directly, but it offsets the footprint that you cannot help making (“Reduce what you can…Offset what you can’t” -- CarbonFund). Offsetting can be accomplished in many ways, and there are many entrepreneurs and organizations out there who will take your money and presumably do the offsetting for you (do some due diligence in choosing a reputable one). Offsetting can be accomplished through activities such as:
Planting trees or investing in reforestation projects.
Investing in third world country agriculture projects.
Investing in air and water purification technologies.
Investing in carbon-reducing projects such as renewable energy and energy efficiency.
In his article about offsetting, Ron Dembo says,
Today, our world is so complicated and we are often so removed from the consequences of our actions, that it takes considerable awareness to realize that when we, say, buy a book or a newspaper we are contributing to the felling of a tree in a distant forest. But once we have this awareness, offsetting helps us balance and compensate for our actions, and can bring us closer to the ideal of achieving a zero footprint on the Earth.

Cross-LoC Trade

India and Pakistan are going to start Cross-Line of Control trade soon. Today, onthe 22nd day of Sep 08 formalitlties to start the trade were announced. An announcement to the effect is likely to be made during the meeting between Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Pakistan President Asif Ali zardari in New York later this week. The decision to go agead for trade was taken at a meeting of the Joint Working Group on Cross-LoC confidence-building measures (CBMs)

Zero tariff trde of items produced in both regions will be conducted on the Srinagar-Muzaffarabad and Pooch-Rawalkot routes. The Kargil-Skardu route could be added later on. According to the indications available, the intension is to start limited trade and expand the list of items after both countries have sorted out issues related to infrastructures such as widening of roads and ensuring that the trade does not extend to products from other parts of the country.

India suggested cross-LoC trade in 2005 when the Srinagar-Muzaffarabad bus service was started and a year later followed up the proposal by suggesting a meeting between businessmen of the two sides. Things got moving in July this year when the Foreign Secretaries exchanged lists of commodities with zero-tariff regime and indicated the items either side was willing to receive.
